How to upload videos from shared school iPads to a class YouTube channel

If students are creating videos with shared school iPads, the best workflow I have found is to create a class YouTube channel and have the students upload the videos themselves. Then, they send a link to you with the uploaded video for you to take a look at.

Teacher instructions:

  1. On your computer, go to Google and sign in with your account (personal or school).
  2. Click on “Add account” then “Create account”
  3. Fill out the boxes.
  4. Note: Google might ask you to use a real name when registering a new account. So make one up (I use “Greg Crescent”, Crescent is my school name).
  5. Use your real birthday in case they ask you later for security. Give them your real phone # for the same reason. Give them your gmail address.
  6. If you can’t read the Captcha, refresh until you find one you can read:

  1. Once you have created a new account, you will find yourself on the Google Homepage. Click on your new account name, then “My account”:

  1. Now you have to give permission for “less secure apps” to access your account. Go to: Sign-in and security > Connected apps and sites >
  2. Make sure that you turn on this feature (it defaults to off).

10. Now students should be able to upload videos to your shared YouTube account from the school devices. Post the login and password somewhere prominently in your room (Click here for a sample poster).

NOTE: Video quality is much higher if you upload a video straight from the app, instead of from the camera roll.
NOTE 2: To find your YouTube Channel, go to YouTube and sign in. Then click on 3 bars top left hand corner, and click on “My Channel”.

You might want to change avatar and your channel art (Hover over the pencil icon, top right hand corner). It’s not easy to get a custom URL anymore (click here for requirements), so I suggest you use bit.ly to get a custom bit.ly URL for it.

Student instructions:

  1. From the app that you created your video with, click on upload or share button.
  2. Tap YouTube icon:

3. Type in our class gmail address and password (created above). Next screen tap “Allow”.
4. Give a title with your name and the name of the video.
5. Scroll down and set privacy to “Unlisted" (it defaults to Private), then click “Share" or "Publish". NOTE: if you want your students to be able to view the videos on the channel afterwards, check off "Public".
